There are many types of batteries available, it can be very confusing to the average layman, see below a brief explination
Automotive or start batteries are not suitable as house batteries, they are designed for supplying a large but short burst of energy to start the motor, after which the alternator recharges the immediately.
House batteries (deep cycle batteries) on the other hand deliver small amounts of energy over long periods of time, and they might not get recharged for hours after discharge, so deep cycle batteries have been designed different from an automotive or start battery.
Deep cycle, lead acid batteries are available as wet or flooded, these need constant maintenance and topping up with distilled water, they also give off fumes, so are not suitable for indoor use. On the other hand AGM or Gel batteries are sealed and require no maintenance at all, and do not emit fumes so are perfect for indoor use.
Also available are Calcium batteries and Lithium batteries. All these batteries have different charge criteria, so we need to be careful when connecting to the solar controller, the controller must be set for the appropriate battery type for the system to work properly.
Vantage RV can supply and fit any of the above. However the batteries most commonly used by us as house batteries are AGM, they are reliable and best value for money, we list them below.
