The solar panel produces energy at a variable rate, which fluctuates vastly based on weather conditions. Cheap or old style solar controllers tend to work almost like a switch, so when the battery voltage reaches 13.8 volt, the controller will turn off to avoid damaging the battery, but this does not give the battery a proper charge and may shorten the life cycle of the battery.

A modern high quality MPPT solar controller is not only more efficient at dealing with the variability of the output form the panel, but will also give the battery, the correct charge criteria as selected by the technician who fitted it, charging the batteries to the correct criteria should significantly increase the life span of the battery
