USA to NZ Certification

wiring conversion for American RV's

Importing caravans and motorhomes from the USA is a great way to acquire large temporary accommodation at affordable prices. Due to the manufacturing costs involved at time of production, it can prove to be an effective way to save money rather importing the vehicles.

However, there will be significant costs incurred when the vehicle arrives in New Zealand. This is due to the fact that it is not legal to import a vehicle without converting the 110 AC wiring and appliances to 230 AC.
Furthermore, it must be ensured that all appliances meet New Zealand Electrical Standards.
Below are the appliances which will requiring replacement:
  • TV
  • Air condition
  • Microwave
  • Gas stove
  • Fridge or fridge element
  • Boiler element
  • Battery charger

New Zealand regulations specify that all cables must be rated to 500 volt and be made up from 7 strand wires. However, American made vehicles are rated to 300 volt and are usually made up of 3 strands or less.

Another requirement is that the vehicle must be fitted with a safe system, consisting of a 16 amp RCBO to protect the occupants from electrical shocks.
On the larger vehicles which require more than 16 amp, larger cables may be used and the vehicle can be set up with a 32 amp supply lead and plug.
Actual certification costs are only $84, however the costs of conversion to New Zealand specifications will be based on how much wiring is involved in getting the vehicle up to specification standards.
